Auditions

Auditions are held by appointment

Please e-mail us at:auditions@stonewallchorale.org

Auditioning is painless;  if you can carry a tune,  have a pleasant voice,  have a knowledge of classical music notation,  a congenial attitude and a willingness to work hard for a couple of hours a week in the West Village with like-minded people,  the Stonewall Chorale may be for you!

The Stonewall Chorale is the nation’s first gay and lesbian chorus,  though you don’t have to be gay to join! We are devoted to singing the great choral classics of the ages –from Medieval and Renaissance to Meredith Monk and Eric Whitacre. We love to sing and are committed to excellence…and we also have a lot of fun.

Singing with the Stonewall Chorale is a fabulous way to make new friends,  explore beautiful music together and offer it back to the community.

Tell us a little about yourself and we will contact you to arrange an audition.

A few facts about the audition

At the audition,  in private with the artistic director,  you’ll have a brief vocal warmup to determine your range and vocal placement. You’ll be asked to sing a prepared song of your choosing —it can be as simple as “My Country,  ‘Tis of Thee”,  an operatic aria,  an oratorio solo,  a popular song or show tune,  —anything you feel comfortable with and you feel shows your voice. If you choose something other than “My Country…”,  please bring a copy of the music. The artistic director will accompany you on the piano. You’ll also be asked to sing back a succession of pitches played on the piano,  and to clap back basic rhythmic patterns,  as well as sight-read some straightforward music.

Here are answers to a few FAQs

  • The Stonewall Chorale is the nation’s first gay and lesbian chorus,  and is celebrating its 35th season. We are committed to singing the great classical repertoire,  but we also sing an eclectic array of music from all periods and styles. Our primary goals are to enrich people’s lives (our own and our audience) through learning and performing beautiful choral music,  and to nurture and celebrate the community that we create together.
